Come visit one of the trial court libraries in the New York State Unified Court System. This event will include an introduction to the print, microform and digital collections of this library founded by state statute in 1863. You will also be introduced to the programs and services available at the library and the Court Attorney operated, Court Help Center.
The session will include an introduction to basic United States and New York legal bibliography. Attendees will be introduced to primary legal sources, secondary sources, and free or low-cost internet-based sources including the state court’s Do It Yourself online programs, Cornell Law School’s Legal Information Institute and the New York State Law Reporting Bureau. Other online Computer Assisted Legal Research tools, such as Westlaw and Lexis will also be discussed. The session will include an introduction to reading case law citations and an overview of Federal and New York State Court structures.

Angela Patti and J. Jay Deveau
Angela Patti began her career as a Librarian in the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library system. After two years in the public library system, she was hired as a reference librarian for the Buffalo law firm Phillips Lytle. For the past 26 years, she has worked for the New York State Unified Court System. Starting as a Law Librarian at the Buffalo Supreme Court Library in 1998, for the past 5 years she has served as the Principal Law Librarian, overseeing the court libraries in the eight counties of the Eighth Judicial District.
J. Jay Deveau, MLS, is Law Librarian at Buffalo Supreme Court Library. His professional law library career began in 1984 with the Buffalo law firm of Saperston & Day. He had subsequent law firm positions with Goldberg Segalla and Phillips Lytle. For more than 20 years he served as adjunct faculty in the Paralegal Department of Hilbert College where he taught the required introductory legal research class. His first public sector law library position began in 2008 as Law Librarian at Elmira Supreme Court Library followed by three years of service as Librarian for the U.S. Court of Appeals, Second Circuit representing the Western and Northern Districts of New York. He returned to the New York State Unified Court System in 2015 when he accepted a position at Buffalo Supreme Court Library. Additionally he has been very active with the Association of Law Libraries of Upstate New York (ALLUNY) serving as President, long term Board Member and multiple stints as Education Chair and Annual Meeting Local Arrangements Chair.
