Supporting Survivors: Connecting Community Members to Domestic and Sexual Violence Resources

Banner for an event titled "Supporting Survivors," focused on connecting the community to domestic and sexual violence resources, with event details for May 28 at SUNY Niagara, Lewis Library.

Description:

Libraries and community organizations are among the first places individuals turn to when seeking help—especially those experiencing domestic abuse or sexual assault. These trusted public spaces offer privacy, accessibility, and support without requiring individuals to immediately disclose personal information. This makes them critical touchpoints for connecting survivors with professional help.

This session is designed for librarians, educators, and community leaders in Niagara county and the surrounding region who want to confidently direct individuals to appropriate services. Representatives from YWCA of the Niagara Frontier will provide an overview of support services and county-specific resources. Participants will explore how their institutions can foster safe, informed pathways to help—and how to empower their communities to respond to sexual violence through awareness and access to resources.

Format:

  • Length: 2 hours
  • Format: In-person presentations by YWCA representatives, resource handouts, and group discussion with real-world examples

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the scope of services offered by the YWCA for individuals affected by domestic and sexual violence.
  • Recognize the role of libraries, schools, and community organizations as safe spaces where individuals may seek guidance.
  • Learn how to respond supportively without assuming the role of a direct service provider.
  • Share accurate, county-specific information and connect individuals to YWCA and other local resources.
