This interactive and experiential course is designed to help you develop an understanding of implicit bias, its impact in libraries and health care, and how it stands in the way of workplace diversity and inclusion. You will leave the course with a deeper understanding of bias, implicit bias, stereotype threat, and microaggression; a greater awareness of your biases; and practical strategies to overcome biases and incorporate cultural competence into your library services.

Shannon Jones (she/her/hers) is Director of Libraries and Professor for the Medical University of South Carolina, where she has worked since 2014. Shannon is the co-editor of Diversity and Inclusion in Libraries: A Call to Action and Strategies. Her research interests include staff recruitment, retention and reward, diversity, equity, and inclusion in libraries, and leadership in academic health sciences libraries. She earned her MLS from North Carolina Central University and an M.Ed. in Adult Learning from Virginia Commonwealth University. She is currently pursuing an Ed.D in Educational Leadership at Charleston Southern University.
Kelsa Bartley, MSI, is Education & Outreach Librarian in the Learning, Research, and Clinical Information Services Department of the Louis Calder Memorial Library, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Miami, FL. Her role includes teaching and providing other library education and research services, as well as outreach and promotion of library services and resources. She is currently the 2020-2021 Chair of the African American Medical Librarians Alliance Caucus (AAMLA) and serves on MLA’s DEI Committee. Her research interests include diversity, equity and inclusion in libraries, library marketing, outreach and social media, technology for health information promotion, and library instruction and instructional design.
Kimberly L. Reynolds, M.D., is a board-certified pediatrician who has dedicated her life’s work to improving the lives of children in south Florida. She has published in premier journals, such as Pediatrics and Hospital Pediatrics, and has conducted training on cultural competence and implicit bias for faculty, staff, residents, and students at the University of Miami.
