This is a great opportunity! Register early! WNYLRC has two free seats available for our members, on a first come, first served basis. If the class is "closed" on our site when you go to register, you will then need to register directly with Girl Develop It at their site:
Want to learn how to code but not sure where to start?
Tired of techies throwing around acronyms that make your head spin?
If you are a complete beginner to coding and/or want to learn how to communicate better with your technical team/friends, this workshop is for you. In this class, we will walk through the fundamentals of web development in layman terms. While we won't be writing code, we'll take you through various components of the web and how they work together. Topics include but are not limited to:
• What is the World Wide Web?
• Where are website files generally stored?
• What is the difference between a client and a server?
• Which programming languages are compiled on a server and which are compiled in a web browser?
• What do you need to know before building a website?
• What language should you use and what are the differences?
• What tools do you need to develop a website?
• Who does what on a typical web development team?
• What is Web 2.0 and the Cloud?
This class is for beginners with little to no technical experience. Bring a notepad, tablet or laptop to take notes. If it's the latter, make sure it's charged as we will not have tables. Come prepared with questions for a Q&A at the end.
Students are required to bring their own laptop for classes. If you do not have a laptop, please contact Caitlin at email@example.com before registering, and we’ll see if we can work something out.
If you have accessibility requirements/requests for accommodations, please provide us with at least 1 week notice so we have adequate time to meet your needs.
If you would like a printed course completion certificate, please let us know. In order to receive a printed course completion certificate you must attend at least 70% of the class. You will be able to pick up your requested certificate at the end of class.
Email Caitlin at firstname.lastname@example.org with questions about the above, and she will get you in touch with GDI.
Katie Barnum is a front-end web developer with a background in graphic design and typography. She became interested in development when she was put in charge of the company website at her first job and started learning HTML and CSS. The rest is history. Katie now works at the University at Buffalo as a web developer, specializing in WordPress. When not in front of the computer, she enjoys rowing, photography, craft beer, and snowboarding.
Katie is excited to work with other ladies (and dudes, too!) to get them started with code so they too can start exploring web technologies!
