UB/WNYLRC Illiad Borrowing Program

The UB/WNYLRC Illiad Borrowing Program was formulated in 2009 as a pilot to offer an interlibrary loan opportunity to member libraries who would otherwise be without any borrowing access.  Seven libraries spanning all areas of the membership from hospital to school to corporate were the initial participants.  Due to the success of the initial pilot and with the responses of the pilot libraries, this initiative for borrowing is now a permanent program of WNYLRC.

A library wishing to join the program pays a participation fee and is given an authorization and login to the University at Buffalo’s Illiad portal.  From that point, an online form is filled out with the interlibrary loan request information and is given expedited attention from the University.  A substantial number of requests are filled directly from the University’s own vast resources.  If the item requested is available, it is sent directly to the requesting library.  If, however, it cannot be filled from the University, the requesting library can choose to have it forwarded onto the OCLC network for an additional fee or simply stop it at that point.  If there are additional fees placed by a lending library, the requesting library is also responsible for those but an upper limit of payment can be chosen during the initial request period.
There are substantial advantages to this program:
  • Direct access with no intermediary handling the requests
  • Expedited service
  • Ability to track each request by logging into a user account
A renewing library’s fee is based on the previous year’s number of items requested and that is applied to an incremental fee schedule.
