8 AM-4:30 PM


Forward-thinking leader with the vision and ability to contribute to the future of music cataloging and metadata. Deep knowledge of cataloging techniques and the ability to evaluate and manage the work of others. Oversees the daily operations of the Catalog Department. Catalogs complex materials in all formats. Serves as Sibley's operations-level liaison for cooperative cataloging activities. Makes professional contributions at the local, regional, and national levels.


  • Management of staff
    • Supervises cataloging staff by interviewing, hiring, training, evaluating, and recommending personnel action.
    • Trains and supervises other Sibley staff in cataloging activities and projects.
    • Reviews and revises the work of cataloging staff and resolves complex cataloging and authority control problems.
  • Cataloging
    • Performs complex cataloging of materials in all formats, and contributes authority and bibliographic records via NACO and BIBCO.
    • Manages Sibley's contributions to cooperative cataloging programs, including the NACO Music Project, PCC/BIBCO, and OCLC Enhance
  • Library & cataloging workflow & policy development
    • Oversees cataloging workflow and makes changes to optimize efficiency.
    • Creates new workflows when needed, in consultation with Sibley Library Department Heads and River Campus Library Department Heads.
    • Assists in the development of policies for the department and for the library.
    • Participates in university libraries policy-making committees.
    • Catalog Maintenance
    • Recommends and implements special cataloging and catalog maintenance projects, including retrospective conversion.
    • May write grants to fund cataloging projects.
    • Professional Contributions to Education on behalf of SML
    • Makes professional contributions to music and/or librarianship through writing, speaking, and/or participating in the work of national organizations, such as the Music Library Association and the American Library Association.
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Masters in Library Science or equivalent from an ALA accredited institution required.
  • Undergraduate degree in music;
  • Master’s degree in Music preferred.
  • 5 or more years library experience; music cataloging experience; supervisory experience; supervisory experience in a cataloging or technical services setting desirable; experience with Alma/Ex Libris systems required.


  • Knowledge of RDA (Resource Description and Access) and Library of Congress PCC Policy Statements, Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, 2nd edition, Library of Congress Classification, Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), Form and Genre Headings (LCGFT), Medium of Performance Terms (LCMPT) and all MARC formats;
  • Knowledge of current and emerging practices regarding metadata creation;
  • Knowledge of music and reference sources;
  • Working knowledge of major European languages;
  • Problem solving skills and the ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing.
  • Engagement with the profession: demonstrated activity in one or more professional organizations at the state, regional, or national level.
