Job Description:

The Erie County Department of Environment and Planning – Environmental Compliance Services Division is actively seeking a LLOT intern for our downtown Buffalo office. The intern selected will be employed for up to 800 hours total during 2024.  Interns may only work up to 18 hours a week while taking classes.   

Work will be generally focused on assisting with the Lending Library of Things (LLOT) Project Initiative.  A LLOT is a collection of objects loaned out to community members, promoting the “sharing economy”.  The LLOT Project Initiative is a collaboration with the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library System.  The intern housed in DEP’s office will work extensively with library staff to determine what types of equipment and items they would be interested in lending, able to repair and that would be of interest to library patrons.  The intern will test the equipment, write simple instructions for use and find resources for additional information.  The intern will assist library staff as they integrate this initiative into the libraries operating process.   

The Intern will work with the DEP team to perform tasks related to LLOT and other recycling projects including:

  • Assisting the Recycling Coordinator
  • Working as a team member on projects under direct supervision and mentorship
  • Updating social media platforms


 High School Graduate or equivalent work-related experience.


  • Must be capable of the basic operation of a Windows-based personal computer and have a familiarity of Microsoft Office including Word and have a full excel proficiency.
  • Organized, responsive and able to gain support and consensus with multiple stakeholders. Ability to communicate with multidisciplinary group.
  • Must effectively communicate orally and in writing.
  • Experience working in libraries is a plus.
